Electronic Navigation Workshop

This workshop aims to unravel some of the mysteries and myths surrounding electronic navigation. We will touch on the subject of ENCs, raster charts, ECDIS, software and apps, and how to use Navionics with traditional paper charts. We will also look at the limitations and dangers of solely relying on electronic navigation. This is a perfect course for those that want to gain a better understanding of how they can use electronic navigation safely and make the most of the resources they have onboard.

 What is covered:

• Vector vs. raster charts

• Difference between, ENCs (Official Vector Charts), RNC (Official Raster charts), and electronic charts

• Electronic chart symbols

• Get familiar with ECDIS (Electronic Chart Display Information System)

• How to find the appropriate software for running ENCs.

• Get familiar with Open CPN

• How to get charts for Open CPN

• Get familiar with Navionics: how to download charts, community edits, routeing

• Limitations, accuracy and dangers of Electronic Charts: differential, HDOP, jamming, spoofing.

• Common chart plotter features and terminology: XTE, VMG, COG, SOG

• How to use paper and electronic for passage planning

• What to do when electronic navigation fails

Prerequisites:

  • None, enthusiasm and curiosity are a plus.
